Pavers

Pavers Pavers provide a durable and flexible surface for patios, walkways, driveways, entry areas, and other outdoor spaces. However, in the Poconos and Northeast Pennsylvania, the performance of a paver surface depends as much on what is underneath it as the pavers themselves.

Seasonal freezing and thawing can cause poorly prepared surfaces to shift, settle, or become uneven. JP Construction Management installs paver surfaces around the intended use of the space, existing site conditions, and the preparation required for long-term stability. The result is a finished surface designed for the property, regional conditions, and everyday use.

Types of Pavers We Install

The right paver depends on where it will be installed, the amount of traffic the surface will receive, the style of the property, and the desired appearance. Options include:

  • Concrete Pavers: Available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, textures, and finishes, concrete pavers can work with both traditional and contemporary homes. They are commonly used for patios, walkways, driveways, and other outdoor surfaces.

  • Brick Pavers: Brick provides a classic appearance with consistent sizing that works well for traditional patterns and defined borders. It can be used for walkways, patios, entrances, and other pedestrian areas.

  • Natural Stone Pavers: Materials such as granite, slate, and limestone provide natural variations in texture, shape, and color. Stone can create a distinctive finish for patios, walkways, and other outdoor living areas.

  • Permeable Pavers: Permeable paving systems are designed to allow water to pass through the surface and into the prepared layers below, helping manage runoff where site conditions and the overall drainage plan make them appropriate.

  • Interlocking Pavers: Interlocking systems are designed to create a connected, stable surface capable of handling regular use. Depending on the product and installation specifications, they can be used for driveways, patios, walkways, and other high-traffic areas.

Paver Installation & Base Preparation

A lasting paver installation begins below the finished surface. Simply placing pavers over inadequately prepared soil can lead to settlement, movement, low spots, and uneven joints as the ground experiences moisture changes and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Installation begins by excavating to a depth that allows for the required aggregate base, bedding layer, and paver thickness. The necessary excavation and base depth depend on the intended use of the surface, existing soil conditions, drainage, and anticipated loads.

The subgrade is prepared before layers of graded aggregate are installed and compacted to create a stable base. Driveways and other areas carrying vehicle loads generally require different preparation than pedestrian surfaces.

Proper grading is also established during preparation so water does not collect beneath or across the finished paving. Once the base and bedding layers are ready, the pavers can be laid to the planned pattern and elevation.

Edge restraints help prevent the perimeter from spreading or shifting, while the appropriate joint material stabilizes the individual units and helps maintain consistent spacing. Together, the base, edge restraints, and joint material help maintain the integrity of the finished surface.

Driveways vs. Patios vs. Walkways

Paver installations should be designed around how the finished surface will be used.

Paver driveways must support vehicle loads and repeated traffic. Base depth, compaction, paver selection, and edge restraint therefore need to account for the additional load.

Paver patios are primarily pedestrian spaces and can provide greater flexibility in patterns, borders, colors, and layouts. The design can be coordinated with doors, steps, outdoor seating, grilling areas, and other existing features of the property.

Paver walkways and entry areas need to provide comfortable, consistent transitions between different parts of the property. Proper elevations and grading help create an even walking surface while directing water appropriately.

Why Base Preparation Matters in the Poconos

The Poconos' seasonal temperature changes make base preparation particularly important. Water in the ground can freeze and expand during winter, contributing to frost heave, then thaw and leave areas vulnerable to settlement. A paver surface that looks properly installed when new can become uneven if the supporting layers were not built for these conditions.

A properly constructed aggregate base helps distribute loads and remain consistent through seasonal ground changes. Compaction and drainage are particularly important where moisture beneath the paving system may be exposed to repeated freezing and thawing.

Problems below the installation eventually become visible at the surface. Uneven pavers, spreading edges, low areas, and inconsistent joints can all develop when the underlying preparation does not adequately support the paving system.
